Ball Girl #059: Nick Kyrgios lost Wimbledon but won UBB

Ultimate. Bad. Boy.

Don't know who that is? Let me introduce you.

Nick is a 27-year-old Aussie who played in his first Grand Slam match yesterday. Not only did he literally scream smack, he completed the bad boy vibe with tats, a diamond choker, and a double piercing. He lost the match but won our hearts for all the wrong reasons.

Can I have your number?

700: the number of drinks Kyrgios accused a fan of consuming after she savagely heckled him during the Wimbledon Final. Kyrgios tried to get her kicked out but spoiler alert: it didn’t work.

TLDR

⚾️ The 2022 All-Star Game roster was announced, and like every year, all anyone wants to talk about is who didn’t make the list. Read on for more.

🏀 It’s the NBA Summer League, AKA, summer camp for pro basketball. Teams get to play each other in Las Vegas with all their prospects and current players in attendance. What does this mean? Giant man-children get a free trip to sin city and NBA fans have an excuse to disregard baseball.

🎾 Novak Djokovic won Wimbledon for the men (his 7th Wimbledon title). Elena Rybakina won for the women, becoming the first player representing Kazakhstan to win a Grand Slam singles title.

🏒 The NHL Draft concluded this past weekend, so now teams have turned their attention to free agents. Free agency is like a sample sale. Some absolute dime pieces are up for grabs — expect crazed shoppers swarming towards these — while some out-of-season accessories will sit out and eventually be discarded.

🏁 Charles Leclerc won the Austrian Grand Prix over betting favorite Max Verstappen. Charles has struggled to podium for the past few weeks so this comeback was much needed for his points (and his ego).

All-Star Game rosters announced

The 2022 All Star game roster has come out and there is drama. Think: High School Musical when Ms. Darbus puts up the cast list for the musical and Sharpay finds out she’s got competition.

  • Here are the obvious picks: Aaron Judge, Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani (as pitcher AND hitter!) for the American league, and Ronald Acuna Jr., Mookie Betts, and Joc Pederson for the National league.

  • Here’s who was snubbed: Austin Riley (Braves 3rd base), Freddie Freeman (Dodgers 1st base), and Josh Bell (1st base, Nationals).

Braves best the Nationals in a marathon game

  • Braves (2nd in National League East) and Nationals (5th in NL East) must have drank too much liquor because this game went on a little longer than it should have. These teams faced off in a 12 inning marathon yesterday (for the newbies — baseball games are supposed to be 9 innings). It finally ended when Austin Riley hit a single to finally get some runs in. These teams will play again on Thursday this week.

Schauffele coasts in for another dub

Xander Schauffele, #11 player in the world, walked away from the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open with another win under his belt. Schauffele’s even par 70 final round resulted in a 7-under finish, which proved to be enough to secure the 1st place $1.44mm payout. FYI — this is Schauffele’s FOURTH victory in the past twelve months.

And that’s a wrap on the 2022 Shaving Cream Championship!

  • Trey Mullinax stole the win at the 2022 Barbasol Championship with his razor-sharp performance, making a 14-footer for birdie on 18 to shave out Kevin Streelman. This marks Mullinax’s first Tour win. With the win, he earns his spot in next week’s British Open (and $666k).

Up next? The 2022 British Open

  • When? July 14-17

  • Where? Old Course, St Andrews, UK

  • Purse? $14mm

Tennis — Wimbledon Recap

Surprise, surprise, Djokovic comes out a champion…again

  • Novak Djokovic, #1 men’s singles player in the world, defeated Nick Kyrgios in the finals 3-1, earning his SEVENTH Wimbledon Championship title.

  • This was one of the best tennis matches I’ve ever watched, not because it was close, but because Kyrgios is as crazy as me before I discovered therapy and prozac. He literally yelled at the umpire to get rid of a fan who was heckling him, exclaiming “the one with the dress, the one who looks like she's had about 700 drinks, bro!"

  • He was later fined $4,000 for the unsportsmanlike comment in front of Prince George. Is that like the adult version of getting soap in your mouth?

Rybakina defeats Jabeur 2-1, making history for Kazakhstan

  • Elena Rybakina defeated Ons Jabeur 2-1 to win Wimbledon. In her seven victories throughout the tournament, the champion lost only two sets.

  • Rybakina is originally from Russia, but switched allegiance to Kazakhstan in 2018. It was a fortuitous move for her career, considering in light of the war on Ukraine, Russian players were banned from participating in this year’s Wimbledon.

  • Rybakina (who turned 23 last month) is also the youngest woman to win Wimbledon since Petra Kvitova (who was 21 at the time) in 2011. Meanwhile I’m 24, single, and trying to figure out what to order for dinner.

There’s nothing like outshining your frenemy at their own party

  • This past weekend we had the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Arena, aka, Max Verstappen’s home court. He was the heavy favorite to win (and reminder — he’s won 3 out of the last 4 Austrian grand prixes) but Charles showed up like goddamn Cinderella in the best dress, best shoes, and best chariot to steal first place.

  • But lowkey it was Mercedes who won the day — their drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russel finished third and fourth respectively. And what happened to the other Ferrari and Reb Bull drivers (Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez), you ask? Both DNF’ed, and we all know the rules, girls — it only counts if you finish 👀

Time Out for the Tea

Ajla Tomljanovic claps back at reporters

  • Ajla Tomljanovic, Australian pro tennis player, made it all the way to the Wimbledon quarter-finals, and the first question the press asked her was about her ex-boyfriend (of 5 years), who just happens to be Nick Kyrgios, 2022 Wimbledon finalist. Tomljanovic was pissed at reporters for this and fired back on Twitter.

Megan Rapinoe and Simone Biles both receive Presidential Medal of Freedom

  • Megan Rapinoe, USWNT Soccer Player and activist in the LGBTQ community, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Rapinoe wore a special outfit, wearing a white blazer with BG stitched on the collar in honor of Brittney Griner.

  • Simone Biles, 25 year-old olympic gymnast, became the youngest recipient of the award, awarded “for her advocacy for ‘mental health and safety, children in the foster care system, and victims of sexual assault’ according to the White House.”
